A Pilot burner is made up of several parts including the pilot burner, electrode, thermocouple or sensing electrode and pilot injector. They are often referred to as an OSD, oxypilot, electronic burner ignition or ASD.The pilot burner is a naked flame within the unit that is used to begin combustion of the gas that is coming in to the main burner. When the appliance is activated the gas is allowed in to the burner, through the gas valve, and is then ignited by the pilot flame.
