There are two different types of electrode, the ignition electrodes and the flame sensing electrodes. The ignition electrode causes a spark that starts off combustion. The flame sensing electrodes are responsible for ensuring there is a flame in the burner, and stops fuel being added if the flame is not correctly lit .
